This was the most contentious of the many times I walked the 6 blocks from my apartment to their usual stomping grounds, where they did start off in Lummus Park at 8th St. Then it took a turn… north several blocks in Lummus Park adjacent to a gay bar. This was 2006, so that’s what it was considered by most, gay or straight.
As the images (hopefully) portray, it got heated, as one could well imagine. Nothing physical. Surprisingly, no one called the police, who were very familiar with the troupe. The leader actually was arrested one night. I went to the trial. The judge turned square to the prosecution and said “This is a first amendment issue, and I don’t want to hear anything about behavior that was not criminal. With that, the charges were dropped.
Gotta love that first amendment!
